An online webinar titled “The Data-Driven City: Finding the Balance Between Innovation and Privacy” will take place on 15 May 2025, from 14:00 to 15:00 EET, as part of the activities under the UP2030 project.

As digital technologies continue to evolve, cities across Europe are increasingly implementing “smart” solutions to improve key public services such as transport, utilities, healthcare, and public safety. At the heart of this transformation lies the widespread collection and processing of personal data, often without citizens’ full awareness or explicit consent.

This webinar will examine the legal and practical challenges related to personal data use in smart city environments. Topics will include the applicable regulatory frameworks, less visible or indirect forms of data processing, the re-use of previously collected data, and how to ensure a fair balance between technological innovation and the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms.

The session will be led by Desislava Krusteva, Attorney-at-Law, Partner at Dimitrov, Petkov & Co. Law Firm, and Senior Legal Expert at the Law and Internet Foundation. She is a member of the Sofia Bar Association and the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) and holds CIPP/E and CIPM certifications. Ms. Krusteva has been actively involved in the development of key legislative acts in the fields of e-government and data protection and regularly lectures on digital policy, privacy, and ICT law.

The webinar will be conducted in English and is open to all stakeholders interested in smart city development—legal professionals, data protection specialists, public administration representatives, and members of the ICT sector.

Participation is free of charge, but registration is required here.

This event forms part of the activities of the UP2030 project, funded by the Horizon Europe programme.
