As part of the iCare2 project, Pre-Mediation Desks have been set up in partner countries to serve as contact points for families involved in cross-border disputes, including cases of international child abduction.

These services will provide:

  • Information on available cross- border family mediation services within the territory, taking into account the specific characteristics of each case brought to its attention.
  • Initial assessments to verify whether the necessary conditions for undertaking a mediation process are met.
  • Guidance and referrals to competent professionals and authorities, such as mediators, and if necessary, Central or Judicial Authorities.
  • Temporary agreements and support for the parties before formal mediation proceedings begin.

In practice, the desks help parents by:

  • Assesing the family situation.
  • Preparing families for effective participation in the mediation process and informing them about the rights of the parents and the child.
  • Refering the family to mediators if their situation is assessed as suitable for mediation.
  • Supporting parents in reaching temporary agreements before the mediation process is initiated.
  • Offerring advice on how to preserve or rebuild positive famility relationships.
