This June Law and Internet Foundation team joined the 16th International Scientific Conference on e-Governance and e-Communications (EGEC) presenting two papers.

Prof. Dr. Daniela Ilieva and Polina Petrova drafted a paper summarising the foundation experience in data management and key findings stemming from the DATAMITE project. The paper “The Importance of Data Management Plan within EU-Funded Research and Innovation Projects“ examines the integration of automated workflows, the rapid expansion of Artificial Intelligence in research, as well as the fact that the acceleration of science has become heavily dependent on open and stream-lined access to research data, thereby making good and consistent data management an imperative. Commencing with addressing EU-funded research and innovation projects from a broader perspective, the paper then delves into the specificities of data management plans, explaining their significant role, as well as availing an example of the Horizon Europe project, funded by the European Commission, namely, “DATAMITE”.

This paper was presented by Prof. Dr. Daniela Ilieva as part of the oral session “e-Governance & e-Government”.

The other paper – “Responsible Use of AI-based Technologies in Terrorism Prevention”, drafted by Prof. Dr. George Dimitrov, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Martin Zahariev and Denitsa Kozhuharova was also presented in the same session. Denitsa talked about what it takes to ensure that whenever AI-based technologies are used in the war against terrorism, this does not violate fundamental rights. This was done from several legal perspectives at EU level starting from the specific legislation in the area of fighting terrorism content online, examining the question from the point of view of data protection regime and lastly – concluding with an overview of the newly adopted Artificial Intelligence Act. What is more, the paper in question suggest using ethics as a supplementary resource enabling such responsible behaviour embedded during the design and deployment phase.

The team of Law and Internet Foundation is grateful to Faculty of Management at Technical University of Sofia for holding the event and providing the opportunity not only to further examine topic of interest but also to meet colleagues and learn more about other initiatives in the area of electronic governance and electronic communication.
